Roman Workshop by 3D 2006
By Eleanor Ward - 15th January 2006
On Friday in the afternoon when I came back from lunch, my class and I went into the hall because we were going to watch a Roman workshop. When we were in the hall and sat down we saw a person dressed as a Roman who was going to talk to us about the Romans. These are three things I thought were the most interesting:
The Sword Gladius
The first was about a sword, its proper name is a Sword Gladius, it was very helpful to the Romans because when the sword went into one of the Celts it was easy to pull out because it had lines on it and all of the blood could run out of the Sword Gladius.
Garum sauce made of fish guts
Garum sauce was made from fish guts with little black bits in, which were herbs and salt. I smelt it and it smelt like spices to me.
Stylus wax tablet
The Romans used the wax tablet to write on. It was made of two pieces of wood that were rectangular joined together with two pieces of rope. They wrote on pieces of wax that were smaller squares than the wood. They used a wooden stylus to write with.
Here are two drawings I have drawn, the first is a Sword Gladius and below is a Wax tablet and stylus.
Samuel Gibb On Friday the 13th January 2006 my class went to the Roman Workshop. First we looked at Roman clothes. I dressed up as Julius Caesar, the Roman general. I wore a toga, which was how wealthy Romans used to dress. Poor Romans like slaves wore rags.
Another topic we discussed was Roman food. We smelt spices and garum-sauce made of fish guts. The garum-sauce smelt disgusting!
A fascinating part of the work shop was when we demonstrated Roman Formations. My favourite was the tortoise, where the soldiers hold shields above their heads and around their sides. Some other formations were the wall and marching formations.
The funniest part was when some children shot arrows at a shield and the closest got to shoot at Miss Dickinson's bottom. They missed!

We had an archaeologist who talked to us about the Romans. Everyone had a chance to dress up, I was a roman emperor.
I had some slaves. The ones that looked after me were Lewis and Molly. The kitchen slave was Abigail.
Lewis served the wine. Molly kneeled down and let Jahja put her leg on her. Abigail ground spices.
An emperor wore a toga if they were rich.
Miss Dickinson dressed up as Boudicca. Lauren shot an arrow at her bottom.

The Roman Workshop by Hugh McLynn
I really enjoyed the Roman Workshop.
The archaeologist told us about the things he found in the ground from the time the Romans had invaded England. Emperor Claudius was the leader of the Romans. Claudius wore a white toga.
The people of England were Celts and did not like the Romans. The Celtic queen Boudicca and her army fought the Romans.
The Romans had slaves who were their servants and cooks. The servants had to clean the toilets day and night.
The cooks made a sauce with fish guts and spices. We smelt it and it was terrible!
The perfume they used also smelled terrible.
They wrote on wax tablets with a stylus and when they were finished with it they left them out in the sun to melt, then they could use them again.

The Roman archaeologist was interesting and also very funny, particularly when he was teaching us some of the Roman words,
e.g. Londinium ? meaning London,
garum ? meaning sauce made of fish guts,
stylus ? meaning wax tablet,
scuta ? meaning shield,
cassis ? meaning helmet,
gladius ? meaning sword.
He showed us a broken vase, a glass bottle with lavender perfume in it, a stylus and some garum.
Some people were chosen to be citizens, soldiers or slaves. I was a Roman Soldier. I had to hold a shield and throw a spear at the Celts.
Lauren had to fire an arrow at Boudicca ( who was Miss Dickinson ).

The roman workshop was great.
An archaeologist came and told us what it might have been like in the Roman times.
I dressed up as Boudicca. I had to wear a green tartan like dress and a shawl.
Samuel Gibb dressed up as Julius ceasar the general; he had to wear a toga. Jahjah dressed as roman lady and had to wear a linen tunica with a woollen cloak called a citizen pala.
The best bit was when Lauren shot an arrow at Mrs Dickinson's bottom. Miss Dickinson had dressed up as Boudicca.
The reason they invaded the Celts was because the Celts were very high
standard metal-workers. The Romans also gave London its first name, Londinium. Julius Caesar started the invasion. He was a roman General; They used Elephants to scare the Celts away.
